It’s always fun to take a look at my rankings from last year and see how they held up. Here’s how I ranked every movie from last year’s nominees (except the Docs and Shorts):
1. Jojo Rabbit
2.) “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” and “Little Women” TIED
3.) Bombshell
4.) Knives Out
5.) Parasite
6.) Marriage Story
7.) Avengers: Endgame
8.) Judy
9.) The Two Popes
10.) The Irishman
11.) Frozen II
12.) 1917
13.) Pain and Glory
14.) I Lost My Body
15.) Joker
16.) Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
17.) Toy Story 4
18.) Rocketman
19.) Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
20.) Harriet
Movies Below This Line Are Trash, IMO, and I Hate Them
21.) Ford v Ferrari
22.) A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
23.) The Lighthouse
24.) Richard Jewell
25.) Klaus
26.) How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
27.) Ad Astra
28.) The Lion King
28.) Missing Link
29.) Breakthrough
Before we go any further, I have to admit that “Parasite” definitely deserved to be above “Bombshell”, which was perfectly forgettable. But the political climate made “Bombshell” an impactful movie at the time, which is why it got such a high ranking. I’m still sticking with the “Knives Out” high ranking; that movie is awesome!!!
I am very happy that “Parasite” went on to win best picture, but I’m still sticking by “JoJo Rabbit” as my number one. I would have to say, in hindsight, “Little Women” probably should have gotten the edge over “Once Upon A Time…”
Other things I noted was that “The Two Popes” was so forgettable that, a year later, I couldn’t tell you a thing about it. Also, the “Joker” was not far enough down the list. It should probably have been at the bottom… well almost bottom.
The two things I’m sure I got right was that “Breakthrough” was propaganda trash, and I still hate “Ad Astra” with a passion of a thousand suns.
I don’t use any one specific way to rank any movie, and my ranking are completely subjective. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
